Accessibility

Mermaids of the Caribbean™ exists so that every child can see herself. That belief applies to how this website works, too — not just what is in it.
What we have built in
- Reduce motion — a button in the bottom corner of the home page turns off the bubbles, swimming fish and drifting animations. Your choice is remembered on your device.
- System preference respected — if your phone or computer is already set to "reduce motion", we honour it automatically.
- Sound is off until you ask for it — the ocean sound never plays on its own. The 🔇 button turns it on and off.
- Large tap targets — buttons and menu links are sized for small hands and for anyone using a phone one-handed.
- Keyboard navigation — you can move through the site with the Tab key, and a "Skip to content" link appears first so you don't have to tab through the whole menu.
- Escape closes the menu on mobile.
- Readable text — text sizes scale with your browser settings, and we avoid placing important words over the busiest parts of the artwork.
- Image descriptions — our illustrations carry alternative text for screen readers.
What we are still working on
We are a small independent publisher, and we would rather tell you honestly where we are than claim more than we have done:
- Colour contrast on a few decorative sections is still being improved.
- Lyrics are being added to every song so they can be read as well as heard.
- Captions for sing-along videos are being added as those videos are produced.
- Full screen-reader testing across the site is ongoing.
Our goal
We are working towards WCAG 2.1 Level AA across the site.
Tell us what isn't working
If something on this site is hard to use — for you or for your child — please tell us. Describe what happened and what device you were using, and we will fix it. Feedback from families is how this site gets better.
